ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has called for calm and due process following the bombshell allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. While acknowledging the public’s frustration in a country battling violent crime and impunity, Mbalula warned that justice must never come at the cost of legal credibility or the rule of law.

“It’s understandable that people want instant accountability,” Mbalula said, “but serious allegations, especially those involving the integrity of law enforcement, must be thoroughly investigated through official, lawful channels — not tried in the court of public opinion.”

Mbalula reaffirmed the ANC’s commitment to transparency and accountability, but stressed that vigilante attitudes and public pressure cannot be allowed to derail constitutional processes. His comments follow a turbulent week in South African politics and policing, with Mkhwanazi accusing Mchunu of interfering in a task team probing political killings — an allegation that has already triggered a judicial inquiry and sent shockwaves through government.

As the inquiry looms, Mbalula’s message is clear: South Africa’s democratic institutions must be allowed to function independently and fairly, especially when the stakes are this high.
