In a powerful display of community engagement, Court Preparation Officers from the Welkom Court visited Welkom Preparatory School as part of National Child Protection Week, using interactive sessions to educate learners on child safety, justice, and their rights.
Led by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the initiative aimed to equip young learners with essential protective life skills while demystifying the role of the justice system in safeguarding children.
βWe want children to know that the justice system is here to protect themβnot scare them,β said NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokotsoane.

Using age-appropriate language and relatable scenarios, court officers explained the roles of prosecutors, court officials, and support structures like victim assistance services. Learners were encouraged to speak out against abuse and seek help when needed.
The interactive nature of the visit sparked curiosity and empowered learners to ask questions, building trust between the community and the justice system.
π€ A Shared Responsibility
The initiative also reinforced a broader message: protecting children is a shared duty between families, schools, communities, and the justice sector.
βItβs about creating a network of safety where children feel seen, heard, and supported,β added Senokotsoane.
π± Planting Seeds of Awareness and Empowerment
By bringing the justice system into the classroom, the NPA and Welkom Court not only raised awareness but also planted seeds of confidence and empowerment in young mindsβreminding them that the law stands with them.
As Child Protection Week continues, efforts like this underline the importance of proactive, preventative education in building a safer future for South Africaβs children.
