What began as a routine student protest at Walter Sisulu University’s Mthatha campus descended into unthinkable violence on Tuesday when the institution’s residence manager allegedly opened fire on a crowd of demonstrators, leaving one student dead and three others injured. Shock rippled across the campus community after eyewitnesses reported that tensions escalated near the manager’s residence, where protesting students had gathered and reportedly began throwing stones. In a harrowing turn, the residence manager is said to have drawn a firearm and discharged multiple rounds into the group. One student died at the scene, while three others were rushed to a nearby hospital, with at least one in critical condition. In the aftermath, the manager’s vehicle was set alight by enraged students as chaos engulfed the area. With security forces now stationed on campus and the atmosphere still volatile, Eastern Cape MEC for Community Safety Xolile Nqatha condemned the shooting and called for calm. Police have launched an official investigation, but the university has yet to release a formal statement, leaving students, families, and the nation gripped by outrage and uncertainty.
