A devastating crash on the N2 near the Mthunzini Toll Plaza in northern KwaZulu-Natal has claimed the lives of nine people, most of whom were women traveling to Dukuduku near Mtubatuba. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday morning, May 11, 2025, leaving families and the local community in deep mourning.
The victims were reportedly members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) who had been traveling to a religious gathering when their Hyundai H-1 minibus collided with a tow truck. The tow truck is believed to have rear-ended the minibus, triggering a deadly chain of events. Nine people lost their lives, and several others were seriously injured, with emergency teams swiftly transporting the wounded to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment.
KwaZulu-Natalβs MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, expressed profound sorrow over the loss, especially on Mother’s Day, a day meant to honor mothers. “The loss of these women is a painful blow to their families and to the ZCC community,” Duma said in a statement.
The Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) have launched a full investigation to determine the cause of the crash, focusing on the actions of both the minibus driver and the tow truck operator.
This tragedy has cast a shadow over Mother’s Day celebrations in the province, and the ZCC community is left grieving the lives lost and the lives forever changed.
