🚛 42 Bags, One Bakkie, R8 Million in Dagga: Limpopo Cops Strike Big
In a significant victory against cross-border drug trafficking, Limpopo police intercepted a bakkie hauling over 850 kilograms of compressed dagga, worth an estimated R8 million, early Friday morning near the Mooketsi Weighbridge on the R36.
The white Toyota Hilux, towing a trailer, was en route from eSwatini to the Vhembe District when officers, conducting a routine inspection, uncovered the massive haul neatly packed into 42 concealed bags.
👮 Coordinated Operation, Swift Arrest
The bust, carried out around 07h00, was the result of a joint operation involving:
- Limpopo Tracking and Task Teams
- Specialised police units
- External law enforcement agencies
The 27-year-old driver, unable to provide a legitimate explanation for the cargo, was arrested on the spot and is now facing serious drug trafficking charges.
🧩 Investigations Underway
Police believe the dagga was likely destined for distribution hubs in Limpopo or Gauteng and could be tied to larger syndicates operating along cross-border smuggling routes from eSwatini and Mozambique.
“This seizure is part of a broader crackdown on transnational crime,” said Limpopo police spokesperson. “We will continue to dismantle these networks.”
The suspect is expected to appear in court soon, while investigations continue to trace the supply chain and end recipients of the illicit cargo.
📉 A Blow to the Drug Trade
This bust marks one of the largest dagga seizures in the province this year and underscores the strategic role of border control and road surveillance in combating the flow of illegal substances into South Africa.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to:
- Tighter road inspections
- Enhanced intelligence sharing
- Continued disruption of trafficking routes
