Two high-ranking leaders of the African National Congress (ANC) in Mangaung had a harrowing escape after the state-owned vehicle they were traveling in crashed and rolled on the N1 near Verkeerdevlei on August 15. Part of a government convoy with bodyguards in tow, the vehicle reportedly lost controlβ€”yet, miraculously, everyone survived with no serious injuries.

But the drama didn’t end on the roadside.

The crash has now snowballed into a political storm, with the African Congress for Transformation (ACT) stepping forward to demand answers. At the heart of the outrage? Accusations that government resourcesβ€”meant for public serviceβ€”were being used for political convenience. ACT spokesperson Mo’hau Khumalo didn’t mince words, calling for immediate suspensions and a full investigation by both the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) and the South African Police Service (SAPS). He cited possible breaches of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), a serious allegation with significant legal implications.

As the official cause of the accident remains under review, frustration continues to simmer among Mangaung residents. Many are questioning how government officials can justify the use of public vehicles for apparent political activity, especially in a region already struggling with poor service delivery.

The ANC has yet to respond publiclyβ€”adding to the growing unease.

This incident now stands as more than a traffic mishapβ€”it’s a symbol of deeper issues around accountability, transparency, and the blurred lines between state and party.
