Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni has confirmed that Cabinet has welcomed the arrest of more than 17,000 suspects during the latest phase of Operation Shaniela II, a large-scale national crime-fighting blitz that has delivered major blows to criminal networks across South Africa.

Among those arrested, nearly 3,000 individuals were wanted for serious and violent crimes, including murder, armed robbery, and sexual offences. The sweep forms part of a broader strategy to dismantle syndicates and restore law and order in crime-plagued communities.

One of the operation’s most notable breakthroughs came in Barberton, Mpumalanga, where 550 illegal miners were apprehended in a coordinated crackdown on illicit mining operations. According to Ntshavheni, 50 of those arrested are appearing in court today, marking the beginning of what officials hope will be swift and decisive prosecution.

β€œCabinet commends the work of law enforcement in this operation and reaffirms its support for ongoing efforts to root out criminality,” Ntshavheni stated, adding that such actions send a clear message that crime will not be toleratedβ€”regardless of its form.

As police and specialized units continue their nationwide clampdown, the government says it remains focused on sustaining pressure on organized crime, while also ensuring that justice is served through the courts. Operation Shaniela II is being hailed as a significant step forward in reclaiming safety and security for South African citizens.
