In a dramatic twist to one of South Africaβs most explosive policing scandals, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has publicly denied any involvement with a notorious crime syndicate allegedly led by businessman Vusimuzi βCatβ Matlala and Brown Mogotsi.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi had accused Mchunu of orchestrating the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team in March 2025, pointing to damning evidence from Matlalaβs phone that allegedly showed financial support flowing to Mchunuβs political activities via Mogotsi.
Addressing the nation on July 9, Mchunu firmly denied ever meeting or speaking to Matlala, asserting he never received any favors or funding from him. He revealed that his role was limited to initiating a review of a controversial R360 million SAPS tender awarded to Matlalaβs companyβa contract that was subsequently canceled.
While Mchunu acknowledged knowing Brown Mogotsi as a βcomrade,β he rejected any claims of improper association or personal gain.
The allegations have escalated into a βnational security concern,β with President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasizing the gravity of the situation. Calls for Mchunuβs resignation and the establishment of a commission of inquiry are growing louder across political and public spheres.
Mchunu has welcomed a transparent investigation, urging that it be conducted swiftly to clear his name and uphold the integrity of the South African Police Service.
As the saga unfolds, South Africans await answers that could reshape the future of their law enforcement and political leadership.
