KwaZulu-Natal police struck decisively on July 3, 2025, foiling a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Msinga after receiving a crucial intelligence tip-off. What began as a covert surveillance operation quickly escalated into a violent shootout, leaving two suspects dead and others behind bars.
Police, working alongside private security, had been monitoring two cash vans in the area when the suspects made their move. But instead of a successful ambush, the heist turned deadly when law enforcement intervened, sparking a gun battle at the scene.
Two suspects were fatally shot during the confrontation and declared dead on site. According to authorities, one of the deceased was carrying a firearm and had a chilling criminal record β wanted for murder, three attempted murders, and business robbery.
Two other suspects, both in their forties, were arrested and now face serious charges, including illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, and attempted murder.
The swift, intelligence-led operation highlights the growing coordination between police and private security in combating organized crime and CIT syndicates in South Africa β and serves as a stark warning to those plotting similar crimes.
