A routine court day turned deadly when a suspect was fatally shot at the Melmoth Magistrate’s Court after attempting to grab a firearm from a court orderly.

The dramatic incident unfolded in a matter of seconds. According to the Department of Justice, a second court orderly reacted swiftly to the threat, opening fire and fatally wounding the suspect, who was declared dead at the scene.

Officials say the suspect’s aggressive move posed a serious risk to both staff and civilians inside the courthouse. Fortunately, the rapid response of court security prevented a potentially tragic escalation.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched a formal investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities are also reviewing current safety procedures in light of the incident.

Despite the shock, the Department of Justice confirmed that court operations continued uninterrupted, and enhanced security measures are being introduced to protect court personnel and visitors.

“The bravery and decisive action of the court orderlies ensured the safety of everyone present,” a Justice Department spokesperson said.

As details emerge, the event has sparked renewed conversation about security protocols in South African courts, with many calling for a review of how dangerous suspects are handled in public legal settings.
