Limpopo, South Africa β If you’re planning to hit the road this Easter weekend, prepare for serious delays β especially if you’re heading toward Limpopo. Thousands of faithful from the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) and St Engenas ZCC are making their way to Moria for the annual Easter pilgrimage, causing heavy traffic congestion on major routes.

The R71 near Moria and the N1 from Gauteng have already seen increased volumes, and authorities are warning that more gridlock is expected as the weekend progresses.
To tackle the surge, the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has rolled out an expanded presence of traffic officers along high-risk and high-volume roads β including the N1, N11, R101, and R71. The focus: keeping traffic moving and ensuring road safety during one of the busiest travel periods in the country.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) projects that over 1.2 million vehicles will crowd South Africaβs main highways over Easter, with Limpopo-bound routes among the worst-hit.
Motorists are strongly urged to plan ahead, remain calm, and consider alternative routes like the MokopaneβLebowakgomo road or the D4040 BoeingβMaja road to bypass the expected gridlock in the Polokwane CBD.
Authorities are also cracking down on reckless driving with a zero-tolerance approach. All road users are reminded to:
- Obey speed limits
- Keep safe following distances
- Stay alert and rested
The message is clear: Whether you’re traveling for faith or family, drive safe β and get there alive.
