Three more suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of a Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer, gunned down in Vlakfontein last week—bringing the total number of arrests in the case to five.
The latest arrests were made on Saturday, 17 May 2025, during an intelligence-led joint operation conducted by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation teams from Vaal Rand and Pretoria, with assistance from various other law enforcement agencies.
🔍 Suspects Tracked to Soweto Safehouse
According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Tebogo Lesego, the suspects—aged between 20 and 35—were located at a residence in Dobsonville, Soweto. During the operation:
- A vehicle allegedly used in the fatal attack was seized.
- Two firearms were recovered, including the service weapon stolen from the slain officer.
🕊️ The Vlakfontein Tragedy
The officer was killed on 15 May, while responding to an attempted robbery on Winchester Street in Vlakfontein. Officers approached a white VW Polo believed to be linked to the crime but were ambushed and fired upon. One officer was fatally shot and pronounced dead at the scene. His weapon was taken by the attackers.
The initial two suspects, aged 25 and 27, were arrested the same day.
⚖️ Court Appearance Scheduled
All five suspects are expected to appear at the Lenasia Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 19 May, facing the following charges:
- Murder
- Possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition
- Defeating the ends of justice
🚨 “We Will Not Be Intimidated” — Hawks
Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, Gauteng Hawks Provincial Head, commended the swift work of the task teams, stating:
“Attacks on law enforcement officers are attacks on the state. We will not allow criminals to operate with impunity.”
