Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen has called out President Cyril Ramaphosa for what he describes as double standards in handling serious allegations within government, urging him to respond decisively to the claims made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi has accused high-ranking officials—including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and others—of interfering in police operations and being linked to a powerful criminal syndicate. Steenhuisen argues that the gravity of these allegations demands the same swift action Ramaphosa took in the case of DA MP and Deputy Trade Minister Andrew Whitfield, who faced immediate scrutiny over far less damning claims.

“You can’t have one set of rules for the opposition and another for your own ministers,” Steenhuisen said. “If Ramaphosa is serious about rooting out corruption, he must act decisively on the Mkhwanazi revelations.”

The DA leader’s statement underscores growing frustration over what critics see as selective accountability in government, particularly as explosive corruption claims continue to rock SAPS leadership and the ruling party.

With pressure mounting from all sides—including opposition parties, civic organizations, and whistleblowers—the call for urgent, transparent action is getting harder for the President to ignore.
