Roodepoort, South Africa β The Gauteng Department of Education has pledged its full support to the grieving family of Likhona Fose, the 14-year-old Grade 8 learner from Ikusasalthu Secondary School, whose mutilated body was tragically discovered in a bush in Durban Deep, Roodepoort.
In a statement, the department confirmed it is assisting with memorial and funeral arrangements, and has committed to providing ongoing psychosocial support to Likhonaβs family, classmates, and school staff affected by the horrific loss.
βWe are deeply saddened by the brutal killing of this young learner,β the department said. βNo child deserves such a fate. We stand with the family in this time of sorrow.β
Community in Shock, Support Mobilized
The brutal nature of Likhona’s death has sent shockwaves through the community, reigniting public concern over child safety and violence in vulnerable areas. School counsellors and trauma teams have been dispatched to support learners and educators dealing with the emotional aftermath.
A Life Cut Tragically Short
Likhona Fose had just begun her high school journey when her life was violently ended. Described by peers as βkind, curious, and full of potential,β her death has sparked grief not only at Ikusasalthu Secondary but across the wider education and civic communities.
Law enforcement authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding her murder. No arrests have been confirmed at this time.

Education MEC and school officials have joined calls for swift justice, urging law enforcement to leave no stone unturned in bringing those responsible to account.
βOur schools must be safe havens, not places where learners and parents live in fear,β said a spokesperson for the department.
Likhona’s memorial service is expected to be announced soon. As her loved ones prepare to lay her to rest, the Gauteng Education Department reaffirmed its commitment to standing with the family β and to protecting all learners from such unspeakable violence.
