Despite his deportation to Nigeria on Sunday, 18 May 2025, Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso remains firmly within the reach of South African justice, according to the Department of Home Affairs. Authorities have reassured the public that Omotoso’s departure does not mark the end of his legal troubles.

In a statement released shortly after his deportation, the Department emphasized that Omotoso is still part of ongoing legal proceedings, including a potential extradition to face charges in South Africa. This comes as the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) continues to appeal his acquittal, determined to ensure that justice is served.

Omotoso, who was at the center of a high-profile sexual abuse trial, was acquitted in April 2025, a decision that sparked outrage among his victims and the broader public. However, the NPA has vowed to challenge the acquittal in an effort to overturn the verdict and bring Omotoso to justice.

While the televangelist’s deportation may have complicated his direct prosecution, South African authorities are exploring all legal avenues, including the possibility of an extradition agreement with Nigeria to bring him back to face trial.

The department’s firm stance sends a clear message that justice will not be sidetracked, regardless of Omotoso’s physical departure from the country. For now, legal experts and observers are awaiting updates on the extradition process and whether Omotoso will ultimately stand trial in South Africa
