Ekurhuleni, Gauteng – The father of a woman who perished alongside three of her children in a devastating fire at the Marikana Informal Settlement has shared heart-wrenching words about the tragic event.
Nkele Phaahla’s family was among the six who lost their lives in the blaze during the early hours of this morning. Also among the deceased were Phaahla’s partner and grandchild.
Describing the harrowing scene, the father said it was “like something out of a movie,” underscoring the horror and shock felt by the community.
Emergency services responded swiftly, but the fire consumed the informal dwellings before help could fully arrive.
The tragedy has left many mourning and calls for urgent attention to the safety conditions in informal settlement.
