Westville, KwaZulu-Natal — A storm of unrest broke out at Westville Senior Primary School on Wednesday, May 28, as frustrated parents clashed with KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education officials over the contentious return of the school’s principal.

The principal—whose identity remains confidential—was asked to leave the premises before the tense meeting due to escalating tensions around his resumption of duties after a precautionary suspension.

Since February 2023, more than 31 serious grievances have been lodged against the principal, including allegations of defamation, financial mismanagement, sexual harassment of teachers, and procedural misconduct. Despite these claims, two independent investigations—one by the Educators’ Support Group and another following teacher submissions—concluded with no formal charges.

The principal, appointed in 2022, was allowed to resume his position, igniting fierce protests from parents and staff alike. Backed by the National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA), parents expressed outrage at what they see as the department’s failure to act decisively.

“We feel let down by the system,” one parent said. “Our concerns are serious, and we demand full transparency and accountability.”

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has committed to concluding the ongoing investigation by June 12, 2025, promising close oversight of the situation while attempting to restore calm within the school community.

As the deadline approaches, all eyes remain fixed on Westville Senior Primary, where hopes for resolution hang in the balance amid growing frustration and calls for justice.
