The political fallout from Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s explosive July 6 revelations continues to escalate, as the Mayibuye iAfrika movement—led by Floyd Shivambu—calls for urgent action and accountability at the highest levels of government.

Mkhwanazi, the KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya of interfering in the now-disbanded Political Killings Task Team, a unit that was investigating politically linked murders and corruption. His allegations have ignited a national outcry, placing the spotlight on a police system allegedly compromised by political manipulation.

In a bold statement, Mayibuye iAfrika demanded a full-scale investigation into the alleged interference, warning that the erosion of justice by those in power cannot go unchecked. The movement called Mkhwanazi’s claims a “red flag for democracy” and insisted that Parliament and the Presidency must act decisively.

Shivambu, known for his hardline stance on government transparency, said the public deserves answers—not internal spin. “If these allegations are true, then it’s not just a policing failure—it’s state capture by another name,” he declared.

As pressure mounts from civic movements and political figures alike, the country braces for a potential shake-up. What began as a press conference has snowballed into a reckoning for South Africa’s law enforcement—and perhaps for its political elite.
