Dan Marokane Expresses Cautious Optimism as Grid Performance Improves
In a rare moment of optimism from the nationβs embattled power utility, Eskom CEO Dan Marokane addressed the public, stating that load shedding may not be necessary this winter if current grid performance continues.
In the video statement, Marokane said Eskom has seen significant improvements in generation capacity, citing fewer breakdowns, better maintenance execution, and greater energy availability. He added that the utility is βcautiously confidentβ it can meet winter demand without major blackouts, although he stopped short of making firm guarantees.
βWe are not declaring victory yet, but the signs are encouraging,β Marokane said. βWeβve seen a measurable turnaround in reliability and are working around the clock to sustain this progress.β
The announcement comes as South Africans brace for colder monthsβtypically the most electricity-intensive period of the year. Public response has been mixed, with some welcoming the update and others urging Eskom to βshow results, not promises.β
The real test will come in June and July, when demand typically peaks. Eskom says it will release regular updates on grid stability throughout the season.
