The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has confirmed that all public schools in the province have received the necessary funding to cover water and electricity costs, with transfers completed in June 2025.
This comes as part of the Departmentβs ongoing commitment to ensure uninterrupted teaching and learning, especially amid concerns about utility disruptions. The GDE emphasized that Section 21 schools, which are granted financial autonomy, are responsible for managing their own municipal accounts, with the Department providing oversight, training, and governance support.
In an earlier intervention in April 2025, the GDE stepped in to assist schools with overdue municipal accounts, reinforcing its proactive stance in addressing operational challenges that could affect learners.
The Department is now calling on parents, local communities, and stakeholders to actively support School Governing Bodies (SGBs) in managing these responsibilities effectively, ensuring that school environments remain functional and financially compliant.
