Two young men have been arrested following a successful drug bust by the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit on Tuesday, 24 June 2025, highlighting ongoing efforts to clamp down on local narcotics networks.
The operation began with a tip-off that led officers to Kutloanong, where a 27-year-old suspect was caught in possession of crystal meth, nyaope, and R118 in cash, believed to be the proceeds of drug sales.
Shortly after, in a separate raid in the Odendaalsrus CBD, a 26-year-old suspect was arrested with 20 packets of nyaope and R162 in cash.
Police believe both suspects are linked to street-level drug distribution in the area. The drugs, particularly nyaope and crystal meth, are known to be highly addictive and damaging, especially among youth.
The suspects are currently in custody and are scheduled to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of drug possession and dealing.
Law enforcement authorities say this is part of a broader anti-drug initiative aimed at dismantling supply chains in the Free State.
The public is urged to continue providing information that could assist in cleaning up communities affected by drugs.
