In a groundbreaking achievement that’s inspiring hope and rewriting history, Dr Louisa Dlamini has become the first Black student to graduate with a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Radiation Oncology from the University of Pretoria.
Her accomplishment is not just a personal victory, but a powerful milestone for representation in medicine—particularly in a specialty where diversity has long been lacking.
Driven by a deep commitment to social justice, Dr Dlamini said her passion for radiation oncology stemmed from witnessing the devastating lack of access to cancer treatment in disadvantaged communities. Rather than turning away, she chose to be part of the solution.
“My goal has always been to bring healing where it’s most needed—to bridge the gap in cancer care for the underserved,” Dr Dlamini stated.
With cancer treatment facilities often limited in under-resourced areas, her work is already paving the way for future oncologists who want to practice with both excellence and empathy. Dr Dlamini’s historic graduation marks a new chapter in South African medicine, one that centers equity, representation, and meaningful change.
