Suspended Police Minister and ANC NEC member Senzo Mchunu has delivered a sobering message to the African National Congress (ANC), warning that the party is teetering on the brink of collapse unless urgent internal reforms are carried out.

Speaking on Saturday at a memorial service for liberation stalwart Nokuhamba Nyawo in Machobeni, Ngwavuma, Mchunu painted a dire picture of the ANC’s trajectory, comparing it to “a person walking on the edge of a cliff.”

He pointed to growing voter dissatisfaction, complacency within the party, and a culture of entitlement as key reasons for recent electoral setbacks. “People still love the ANC, but we became big-headed and they punished us,” he admitted, highlighting the 2026 local government elections as a make-or-break moment for the party.

While Mchunu is currently on special leave amid corruption allegations, he sidestepped addressing the charges, stating he would respond in due time.

Backing his concerns, KZN ANC coordinator Mike Mabuyakhulu also called for deep introspection, dismissing current coalition arrangements with parties like the IFP and DA as temporary, not long-term solutions.

Mchunu concluded with a stark warning: if the ANC fails to reform, it risks being “reduced to history” by the 2029 national elections — a once-dominant liberation movement at risk of fading into irrelevance.
