Domestic Dispute Turns Violent in Mhlasini, KwaZulu-Natal
MHLASINI, KZN – A domestic altercation in KwaZulu-Natal took a violent turn on Tuesday after a woman allegedly spent her R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant on alcohol, sparking a confrontation with her boyfriend that ended in physical assault and a knife injury.

Officers from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) were dispatched to the scene following reports of a violent dispute. Upon arrival, RUSA officials were told that the man became enraged after learning that his partner had used the grant money—intended for basic support—to buy alcohol.
🗡️ Confrontation Turns Dangerous
According to eyewitnesses and reports, the woman, believed to have been intoxicated at the time, admitted to spending the funds on alcohol. This confession escalated the argument, with the man allegedly physically assaulting her.
Matters grew more alarming when he reportedly pulled a knife and held it to her throat. In a desperate attempt to defend herself, the woman grabbed the blade, suffering a deep laceration to her hand.
👮 No Charges Laid Despite Severity
Despite the seriousness of the incident, the victim refused to open a criminal case against her partner. Authorities say they are concerned about ongoing safety in the household but can take no further action without cooperation from the victim.
🧠 SRD Grant Abuse and GBV Concerns
This incident raises ongoing concerns about domestic violence, grant misuse, and alcohol abuse in vulnerable communities. The SRD grant, introduced to support financially struggling citizens, is intended to cover essentials like food, transport, and hygiene products—but many cases have shown misuse.
