Trevor Yabo, 39, is a transformed man, now feeling respected and taken seriously by those who once saw him as a boy. At 37, Trevor underwent the traditional initiation process at Somagwaza Institute, which he credits for changing his life. “I’m a man today because of Somagwaza. My life has changedβ€”I can now walk confidently in spaces where I was once excluded,” he shared.

Before his initiation, Trevor struggled with low self-esteem, particularly when women would reject him, calling him a boy. This caused him to fear approaching women and affected his sense of self-worth. However, since returning from the mountain, Trevor’s life has taken a positive turn. “I now have a girlfriend and I’m truly happy,” he said, reflecting on how his confidence and respect from others have grown.

As a way of giving back, Trevor has joined Somagwaza’s efforts to support older initiates. The program, led by chairman Sikelela Zokufa, helps men over 40 who, like Trevor, have long been treated as boys. “We’re restoring their dignity and helping them regain their confidence as men,” said Zokufa. The latest group of men began their journey on 8 November and will return on 16 December, ready to reclaim the respect they deserve.
