A female police officer tragically passed away at Theunissen Police Station in the Free State on Saturday, 4 January. The officer had reported for duty as usual but later asked for a firearm, which was reportedly used in the incident. The reasons behind her actions remain unclear, and an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) expressed deep concern about the mental health challenges faced by police officers. Spokesperson Richard Mamabolo highlighted that many officers struggle with issues such as stress, financial difficulties, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He emphasized the importance of utilizing Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP) offered by the South African Police Service (SAPS) to provide better support to officers.

Mantoetse Molapo, secretary of the South African Police Union (Sapu), also called for stronger mental health services for officers. She noted that although wellness services are available, there is a need for more support and resources to ensure officers receive the care they need, especially after dealing with difficult or traumatic situations in their work.

Both unions have urged police leadership to improve the mental health services available to officers, encouraging them to seek help before reaching a point of crisis. They also suggested that police commanders be more proactive in offering emotional support to their teams and creating a safe environment where officers feel comfortable discussing their struggles.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is looking into the incident. Their spokesperson, Phaladi Shuping, confirmed that the officer was found after colleagues heard a gunshot. The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected as they continue to gather information. This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting the mental health of those who serve in law enforcement.
