The Western Cape Mobility Department has issued a warning about a scam targeting individuals eager to become traffic officers. Fraudsters are posing as representatives of the Gene Louw Traffic Training College, using social media to deceive hopeful applicants into paying for fake registration and enrollment processes.

The scammers are requesting a R150 payment for registration forms, followed by an additional R3,000 for enrollment. Many victims, believing they had secured legitimate training opportunities, arrived at the college only to discover they had been duped. The department has since opened a case of fraud and is working closely with law enforcement to address the issue.

The Western Cape Mobility Department clarified that all official job postings for traffic officers are advertised through recognized channels, including newspapers and the Western Cape Government website. Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku strongly urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. β€œIt’s deeply concerning that scammers prey on the hopes of those wanting to serve their communities. We will continue to protect residents and ensure the integrity of our recruitment processes,” Sileku said.

Gene Louw Traffic College Head Jacqueline Tweedie expressed disappointment over the exploitation of aspiring traffic officers. She emphasized that admission to the college does not require any payment and urged applicants to verify all information through official channels. The department also stressed that the college does not use social media to communicate about recruitment or training opportunities.
