Despite increased efforts by SAPS, with support from the EMPD, Crime Prevention Wardens, and patrollers, the recent tragic killing of a 13-year-old boy in the Isekelo Section underscores the gravity of the situation.
The Thembisa policing precinct is currently experiencing an increase in crime, including incidents of house robberies, car hijackings, and other serious offences. In response to this growing concern, Brigadier Cyril Nkuna, the station commander of Thembisa SAPS, has been holding a series of community imbizos (meetings) across the precinct’s seven sectors. These gatherings aim to foster neighbourhood safety, encourage the formation of community watch groups, and encourage residents to actively participate in sector forums to help strengthen cooperation with law enforcement.
While efforts to combat crime have been stepped up, the recent tragic loss of a 13-year-old boy in the Isekelo Section highlights the ongoing challenges the community faces. On the night of the incident, the young boy was at home with his family when two individuals entered their property. According to the family, the situation unfolded when the boyβs great-uncle noticed two people tampering with his Isuzu bakkie parked outside. Suspecting an attempt to steal the vehicle, he called out to them, hoping to deter their actions.
The situation escalated, and the suspects approached the house. The great-uncle managed to lock the door, but the individuals eventually gained entry, demanding the keys to the vehicle. During the confusion, a tragic accident occurred, and the young boy was struck. He was quickly rushed to Thembisa Hospital, but, sadly, he was declared dead on arrival.
The SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit has been providing support to the family, assisting them in connecting with the Department of Social Development for further help. Special attention is being given to the emotional well-being of the two younger children who witnessed the event, with counselling services available to support them as they prepare for their final exams.
Brigadier Nkuna has once again stressed the importance of community involvement in the fight against crime. “We need residents to be proactive by joining sector forums, neighbourhood watches, and other safety initiatives. By working together, we can reduce crime and help build safer communities for everyone,” he said.
As Thembisa SAPS continues its efforts to address crime in the area, the community is encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of collective action in ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.
