Smezi became a victim of food poisoning after consuming biscuits purchased from a local shop, leaving him seriously unwell.

Food poisoning, which has tragically claimed the lives of at least 23 children across South Africa, continues to raise serious concerns, particularly after victims consumed snacks purchased from spaza shops. The latest to fall ill is Thembisa-based Afro-pop artist Smezi, whose real name is Steven Zulu Shongwe.

On November 11, Smezi purchased a packet of biscuits from a Somalian-owned spaza shop in his neighborhood. After eating the biscuits at home, he began experiencing severe stomach cramps, dizziness, and a sense of weakness. Concerned about his health, his partner, Smezi Kazi, immediately arranged for an Uber and rushed him to Thembisa Hospital for urgent medical attention.

The incident has drawn attention to the ongoing food safety crisis in South Africa, particularly the risks posed by snacks sold at informal vendors. In recent weeks, numerous cases of food poisoning linked to spaza shop products have surfaced, with many victims being children who consumed contaminated snacks from these local shops.

Authorities are actively investigating the source of the tainted goods, but the alarming trend highlights the urgent need for improved regulation and safety measures for food sold in informal markets. Smezi’s case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in everyday purchases and the importance of food safety for all South Africans.
