Social media influencer and content creator Sinikiwe Mhlongo was arrested last week for alleged reckless driving and speeding in Fourways, Johannesburg, drawing significant attention. The 26-year-old influencer, known for her presence on platforms like YouTube and Instagram, was apprehended after reportedly driving at 180 km/h in a 60 km/h zone near the Fourways Gardens estate. Mhlongo, who has built a large following through her content, was granted bail of R1,000 after her arrest and subsequent detention at Sandton Police Station.
Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that Mhlongo appeared in the Randburg Magistrateβs Court on 11 November 2024, where she faced charges related to the incident. However, the outcome of the court appearance had not been confirmed at the time of publishing, as City Press was awaiting comment from National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane.
According to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Mhlongo was arrested following a routine traffic operation in which officials used speed cameras to detect violations. An officer involved in the arrest stated that Mhlongo attempted to resist, claiming her celebrity status as a defense. The officer further revealed that Mhlongo was tested for alcohol consumption at the scene, although the results have not been disclosed. The operation also led to the arrest of 52 other individuals for similar offenses, including driving under the influence of alcohol.
This incident comes just months after Mhlongo made headlines for addressing online trolls who targeted her following her breakup with actor Zamani Mbatha. In a viral Instagram post, Mhlongo responded to the harsh criticism she faced, questioning why people felt entitled to be rude and disrespectful to her. Despite the controversy, Mhlongo has remained a prominent figure in the social media sphere, and her recent arrest adds to her growing public profile.
