Keneilwe Shalaba, a heavily pregnant mother of three, appeared before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court today for the continuation of her bail hearing. Shalaba, who is accused of selling her two-year-old son, Kutlwano, was arrested in connection with human trafficking, conspiracy to commit an offence, and making a false police statement. The case revolves around her report that her son was kidnapped by three unknown men, a claim that was later revealed to be fabricated.

The investigating officer, Sergeant George Motloung, presented shocking new evidence during the hearing, revealing that Shalaba had received a R75,000 deposit into her bank account on the same day she reported her son missing. Motloung stated that Shalaba had admitted to this transaction in her statement, and bank records corroborated the claim. He argued that Shalaba posed a significant risk to her remaining children and should not be granted bail.

Shalaba’s defense, however, highlighted her pregnancy with twins and her concerns about the conditions in prison. She pleaded for bail, claiming that her situation was detrimental to her health and the well-being of her unborn children. Despite her plea, Motloung emphasized the danger she posed, citing her attempts to interfere with state witnesses. He revealed that she had contacted a witness shortly after reporting the case, instructing them to ask for money from the father of the missing child for his release.

The hearing is ongoing, with the state vehemently opposing bail. Motloung’s argument stresses the gravity of the situation, suggesting that granting Shalaba bail could lead to further harm to her children and compromise the investigation. The court is set to deliberate on whether Shalaba will remain in custody or be granted release.
