A tragic incident unfolded in Bellville, Western Cape, on Saturday, November 23, when a young woman collapsed and died shortly after disembarking from a long-distance bus. The incident occurred outside the Intercape bus company’s offices, leaving fellow passengers and bystanders shocked and distressed.
According to a witness, the woman had just arrived on a bus from Johannesburg with her partner. After disembarking, she left her bags with her companion and went to the restroom. Upon returning, she reportedly expressed feeling dizzy and asked to sit down. Moments later, she collapsed and fell to the ground, tragically passing away on the spot. The bus had only just arrived, and some passengers were still unloading their belongings from the trailer.
A man who was at the Intercape offices to pick up his wife described the scene as sudden and distressing. “She was a young lady, probably in her early 30s. It happened so quickly, and it was heartbreaking to witness,” he said. “The husband was completely shocked and in a state of disbelief. Other passengers gathered around to comfort him during the ordeal.”
In a statement, Intercape confirmed the incident but clarified that the deceased was not a passenger on one of their buses. “We are aware of the incident; however, the individual was not a passenger on our bus, but rather on one of the cross-border buses,” the company said.
Police confirmed the incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. and an inquest docket has been opened for further investigation. “The woman, believed to be 25 years old, collapsed after disembarking from a passenger bus at a bus stop on Mable Street in Bellville. The cause of death will be determined following an autopsy,” said Colonel Malcolm Pojie, a police spokesperson.
Authorities are awaiting the results of the autopsy to determine the cause of death, while the woman’s family and friends are left to mourn the sudden loss.
