A major rescue operation at the Stifontein disused gold mine in Stilfontein has successfully extracted 118 illegal miners, known as “zama zamas,” since it began on Sunday. The mission, which is expected to last between 10 to 16 days, saw the deployment of a 45-tonne Mobile Rescue Winder crane capable of reaching depths of up to 3,000 meters. This specialized equipment is aiding in the complex task of retrieving miners trapped underground.
As of Monday, authorities reported the recovery of 35 miners, but sadly, nine were found deceased. By Tuesday afternoon, 82 more miners were pulled from the shaft, with 56 found alive and 27 confirmed dead. National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that all 82 rescued individuals are facing charges related to illegal mining, trespassing, and violations of the Immigration Act. Additionally, two miners were found in possession of gold, resulting in further charges of illegal possession of gold-bearing material.
The joint operation between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) also involves thorough checks on the rescued miners. After extraction, they are inspected for any illegal items, including gold nuggets and firearms. Those in need of medical care are transferred to nearby health facilities, while the rest are detained. The ongoing operation is expected to continue until 10 p.m. each day.
In light of the fatalities, investigations have been launched into possible misconduct during the operation. Police are probing claims that food supplies sent down to the zama zamas were scarce and deliberately withheld. Additionally, disturbing videos showing miners being allegedly beaten and tortured underground have prompted investigations into possible abuse and assault. These serious allegations are under scrutiny as authorities continue their rescue efforts.
