A dramatic incident unfolded at Empilweni Gompo Community Health Centre (CHC) in East London on Tuesday morning, 21 January, when a nurse’s vehicle struck a group of patients outside the clinic. The accident occurred around 7am, injuring eleven individuals, three of whom sustained serious injuries. The patients, who were waiting for their check-ups, were caught off guard as the vehicle crashed into them while navigating the clinic’s premises.

Mkhululi Ndamase, a spokesperson for the Department of Health, confirmed the incident and provided details on the aftermath. “Two of the seriously injured patients have been transferred to Frere Hospital for more intensive care, while one remains under treatment at Empilweni Gompo CHC,” he said. Fortunately, the rest of the injured were treated and discharged. Authorities have reported the incident to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for investigation.
Buffalo City Mayor Princess Faku expressed her support for the victims, sending her wishes for a swift recovery. During a visit to the health center, Faku discussed patient safety measures with hospital management and emphasized the need for preventive actions to avoid such accidents in the future. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured,” Faku added. “We must unite and offer support to those affected.”
Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa of the SAPS confirmed that a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened.
