The Kempton Express has been inundated with complaints from frustrated motorists about the malfunctioning traffic lights at the Pomona and High Roads, as well as the Atlas Road and Bonaero Drive intersections.

Motorists in Kempton Park are growing increasingly frustrated with malfunctioning traffic lights at key intersections, citing significant disruptions and heightened safety risks. The intersections at Pomona and High Roads, as well as Atlas Road and Bonaero Drive, have been identified as particularly problematic, with drivers reporting regular issues, especially during peak hours.

Commuters navigating these routes are finding it more difficult and dangerous to cross the busy intersections, with some fearing the lack of proper traffic control is contributing to an uptick in accidents. One local motorist, Schoeman, expressed her concern, explaining that crossing the Pomona and High Roads intersection requires navigating eight lanes, four in each direction. She recalled a close call on November 6, when a motorist almost collided with her due to the absence of functioning traffic signals. β€œSometimes, we have to rely on our hooters because people drive without caution,” she said, describing how the chaotic conditions have made the area more hazardous.

Earlier in November, a crash was reported at one of the affected intersections, underscoring the growing dangers posed by the broken traffic lights. Local drivers are now calling for immediate intervention to restore order and safety to the area.

Zweli Dlamini, spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE), addressed the issue, clarifying that the traffic lights in question fall under the jurisdiction of the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GDoRT). “The city is aware of the situation and has reported the issue to the GDoRT multiple times,” Dlamini stated. While the CoE is not responsible for maintaining the traffic signals, it does deploy personnel for temporary traffic control when necessary. Dlamini advised motorists to treat the affected intersections as four-way stops in the interim and urged them to exercise caution and patience.

The Kempton Express has reached out to the GDoRT for comment, and any response will be included in future coverage. In the meantime, local drivers are left hoping for a swift resolution to the ongoing traffic signal issues.
