Saturday, 26 October, marked a somber milestone β the 10th anniversary of the tragic and still-unsolved murder of Senzo Meyiwa, South Africa’s beloved national goalkeeper.
Meyiwa was shot dead under mysterious circumstances on the evening of 26 October 2014 while visiting his then-girlfriend, renowned singer Kelly Khumalo, at her home in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni. He was killed in the presence of several witnesses, including Kelly, her sister Zandile Gumede, their mother Gladness Khumalo, Zandileβs then-boyfriend Longwe Twala, Meyiwaβs close friends Tumelo Madlala and Mthokozisi Twala, as well as two minors.
According to the testimony of those present at the scene, two armed intruders were responsible for the shooting. Despite various accounts and ongoing investigations, the circumstances surrounding Meyiwa’s death have remained shrouded in mystery, leading to widespread frustration and calls for justice.
In 2020, five men were arrested in connection with the murder, and their trial has been ongoing ever since. However, the case has been marred by delays, confusion, and challenges in presenting solid evidence. The state has struggled to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the accused individuals were the perpetrators of the crime, further prolonging the sense of injustice that has gripped Meyiwa’s family, fans, and the nation.
As the anniversary of Meyiwaβs death passes, questions about accountability, the integrity of the investigation, and the pursuit of justice for one of South Africaβs greatest football heroes remain unanswered. Despite the years that have gone by, the family and supporters continue to demand justice, with the hope that the legal system will finally deliver the truth that has eluded the nation for a decade.
