Lerato Mahlangu and Sibusiso Mahlangu are back in court as their sentencing continues in the North Gauteng High Court. The Tshwane couple faces serious charges, including murder, conspiracy to murder, and fraud. Their case, which has seen several delays, is expected to resume on Wednesday, 12 February, with the court hearing final arguments.

Despite previously maintaining their not-guilty plea, the couple was found guilty in November 2024. However, in a dramatic turn, they admitted to their involvement in the crime and issued apologies to the victims’ families. The case revolves around the murder of Lerato’s former lover, Sibusiso Sitebe, whose body was burned and used to fake the death of Sibusiso Mahlangu, allowing them to claim a substantial insurance payout.

The cross-examination of Lerato Mahlangu by State prosecutor Vusimuzi Tshabalala was postponed on 29 January after Lerato broke down in court, unable to explain her sudden change of heart. Her emotional response to the questioning has delayed the proceedings as the court looks to gain a full understanding of her admissions.

Judge Papi Mosupa is set to deliver the sentencing verdict after the final arguments. The case has brought significant attention, with the justice system seen as vital to providing closure and healing for the Sitebe family, who are seeking justice for their loved one’s tragic death.
