The Mayor of Johannesburg, Dada Morero, has announced that he will thoroughly review the court judgment regarding the controversial appointment of Clint Brink as city manager. The Gauteng High Court recently ruled that Brink’s appointment was irregular, ordering him to vacate the position within ten days or once an acting city manager is appointed. The Democratic Alliance (DA) had challenged the appointment, citing Brink’s failure to meet key qualifications, including the required ten years of management experience.
Despite a previous ruling that led to Brink’s removal from the role last year, he was reappointed shortly after in a controversial move under former mayor Kabelo Gwamandaβs tenure. This reappointment was opposed by the DA, leading to a further legal battle that culminated in the recent judgment. Judge Stuart Wilson ruled in favor of the DA, stating that the city should have appointed an acting city manager rather than reappointing Brink. The court also made it clear that any decisions made by Brink during his tenure would not be invalidated.
In response, Mayor Morero emphasized his commitment to respecting the judicial process and said he would carefully consider the implications of the courtβs findings before deciding on the next steps. He assured Johannesburg residents that the city would continue to prioritize service delivery and uphold the law. The DA has welcomed the ruling, calling it a victory for the people of Johannesburg, while also urging the city to avoid wasting further public funds.
