A French couple has been sentenced to prison for the brutal killing of their dog with a chainsaw, a gruesome act carried out in a misguided attempt to avenge the death of their cat.
The horrific incident took place in May 2024 in the town of Levis, northern France. Police were called to the scene following reports of domestic violence, and upon investigation, the woman claimed she had stabbed the dog after discovering her partner’s cat dead.
In court, the woman explained that she and her partner initially planned to euthanize their dog, an Argentinian mastiff, as it was deemed dangerous. However, in a shocking turn, they decided to decapitate it as a form of retribution after the woman alleged that their dog had killed the cat.
The man, who was said to have a history of alcohol and drug abuse, admitted to finishing off the dog to “avenge” his beloved cat. He and his partner, both intoxicated from consuming a litre of vodka and two beers each, were involved in the horrific 20-minute ordeal.
The court handed down sentences of 18 months for the man and two years for the woman. The brutal act, committed under the influence of alcohol, has sparked widespread outrage across France.
This appalling incident comes just months after a French woman allegedly threw her dog off a third-floor balcony at Johannesburgβs OR Tambo International Airport, causing serious injuries to the animal. Despite being critically wounded, the dog survived long enough for airport officials to intervene, but it was later euthanized due to the extent of its injuries.
Both cases highlight a disturbing trend of animal cruelty, with authorities and animal rights groups calling for stricter laws to protect animals from such horrific acts.
