The Congolese government is taking decisive action as it puts 75 soldiers on trial for fleeing the M23 rebel advance and committing violent acts against civilians. These soldiers are accused of abandoning their posts during the M23’s capture of Goma in January 2025. Among the most severe accusations are crimes such as executions, gang rape, sexual slavery, and looting. The actions of these soldiers have sparked widespread outrage, with many condemning their betrayal of their duty to protect civilians.

In addition to the soldiers’ misconduct, a broader pattern of human rights violations has emerged, with the United Nations reporting that not only the Congolese military but also M23 fighters and local militias are implicated in atrocities. These abuses have compounded the suffering of innocent civilians in conflict zones, further exacerbating the violence already brought on by the rebel groups.

South African officials have expressed their dismay over the actions of the Congolese soldiers, especially as the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has a significant peacekeeping presence in the region. President Cyril Ramaphosa deployed 2,900 SANDF troops to help stabilize the DRC, and 14 South African soldiers lost their lives during an attack at Goma airport by the M23 rebels. This tragic loss has amplified the calls for accountability and stronger measures against human rights violations.

The issue has sparked heated debate in South Africa, with leaders like Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) president Julius Malema calling for the recall of SANDF personnel from the DRC. His comments were echoed by Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Helen Zille, who also expressed concern about the ongoing violence. The situation remains tense as both countries grapple with the consequences of the violence and the need for justice.
