In a chilling act of violence, community activist Victor Mtshali was shot and killed on the streets of Cloverdene, Ekurhuleni, on Saturday, 18 January. As he walked down the road, two men reportedly appeared from nowhere and opened fire. Eyewitnesses described hearing gunshots before Mtshali collapsed, dying instantly from the wounds. The suspected assailants, believed to be hitmen (izinkabi), walked away nonchalantly and drove off in a white VW Polo, leaving onlookers in shock.

Mtshaliβs family and community are struggling to understand why he was targeted. His aunt, Rachel Mtshali, expressed disbelief, saying her nephew was a quiet and humble man who was actively involved in community initiatives. “He was not the kind of person to have enemies,” she said. “We are heartbroken and still trying to comprehend why this happened.”
Neighbours in Chief Luthuli, where Victor had been a well-known figure, also expressed their sorrow. “Victor was an advocate for the community, and his loss leaves a huge void,” one neighbour said. “We can’t understand why anyone would go to such lengths to silence someone like him. We only hope justice will be served.”
Ekurhuleni District Police spokesperson Captain Nelda Sekgobela confirmed that a murder investigation has been launched, and authorities are working tirelessly to find those responsible. The community, still reeling from the senseless tragedy, continues to seek answers and justice for the late activist.
