According to police reports, the boys had been on what appeared to be a fishing trip with a friend. Matshoge entered the river first but struggled to swim. In a brave attempt to rescue him, Sekgethi jumped in but, tragically, both boys drowned and were declared dead at the scene. The third friend, who had been bathing nearby, managed to escape the river’s current and was rescued.

The incident occurred amid heavy rains that had raised water levels in the river, posing a greater danger. Local authorities have warned that the ongoing rains have led to high water levels across various parts of the province, increasing the risks near rivers and dams.

Family representative Lehudu Phakane shared the shock and sorrow of the loss, saying, “We only thought our children were out playing, expecting them to return home as usual. We were unaware they had gone to the river. This sudden loss is devastating for all of us.

Khudutseke Primary School Principal Dina Kgatuke, representing the school community, expressed deep grief over the tragedy. “At the start of the academic year, we never expect to lose any of our children. One death is too many. These boys have left a huge void in our school community. Our hearts go out to their families during this incredibly difficult time.

The tragic incident has prompted local authorities to issue warnings to the public, especially parents, to be vigilant about children’s movements around dangerous areas. Makhuthamaga Mayor Makatishe Mosoane urged caution, particularly with rising water levels in rivers and dams. β€œWe urge the public to avoid rivers and dams, especially with the recent heavy rains. Parents must always be vigilant and ensure that their children stay away from these dangerous areas,” she said.

This heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of water safety, particularly during times of adverse weather conditions.
