A community leader, Hendrick Phabantu Zwane, was tragically shot and killed in a targeted attack on Thursday, 21 November, as he walked home in his neighborhood. The 50-year-old’s death is believed to be linked to his outspoken opposition to security measures protecting foreign nationals’ businesses in the area.

According to local residents, the suspected killer, dressed in a black tracksuit, approached Hendrick from behind and shot him multiple times at close range. The tensions surrounding Hendrick’s death stem from a broader dispute over foreign-owned spaza shops in the community. In recent weeks, local residents have been vocal in their opposition to the security detail provided to foreign shop owners, particularly after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement of a registration process for foreign nationals’ businesses. Many in the community argue that foreign-owned shops, particularly spaza shops, are contributing to social unrest and economic challenges.

In the days leading up to his death, Hendrick had expressed growing concern for his safety. Residents claim he confided in them that he had been followed several times, including during a recent trip to Spruitview, Ekurhuleni. On Sunday, 17 November, during a community meeting, Hendrick told those present that he suspected he was being monitored by individuals opposed to his stance on the foreign-owned businesses.

The murder has sparked outrage in the community, with locals suspecting that the killer may have been one of the individuals Hendrick had mentioned. Captain Nelda Sekgobela, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni district police, confirmed that a murder investigation is underway, but no arrests have been made yet. The community continues to demand justice and answers regarding Hendrick’s tragic death.
