Despite facing significant challenges, 17-year-old Mathapelo Sigague from Forte Secondary School in Dobsonville has achieved an incredible 8 distinctions in her matric year. Her journey to success is a testament to her determination and resilience, especially considering the personal and environmental hurdles she faced.
Living in Snake Park, a flood-prone area, Mathapelo had to deal with disrupted school commutes whenever it rained. βWhen the streets flooded, I would wear casual clothes to avoid getting my uniform soaked, take a taxi to school, and change there,β she explained. This routine was crucial to ensure she could attend her early morning lessons, as walking through the flooded streets in a wet uniform wasnβt an option.
Mathapelo also had to contend with heartbreaking personal losses during her matric year. Her grandmother, who had raised her, passed away just as she was preparing for exams. βIt was devastating, but I had to stay focused. I wanted to make her proud,β she said. As if that werenβt enough, her mother fell seriously ill and was hospitalized for several months, adding to the emotional and mental strain.
Through it all, Mathapelo credits her teachers with helping her stay on track. βTheir support, encouragement, and discipline made all the difference. Without them, I might not have made it,β she reflected. The dedication of her educators was crucial in keeping her motivated during one of the toughest years of her life.
Now, Mathapelo is looking to the future with excitement and ambition. She has applied to the University of Pretoria to study mining engineering, eager to embark on the next chapter of her life. With her schoolβs 100% pass rate for over 13 years, her story is a shining example of how resilience, hard work, and support can help overcome even the most challenging circumstances.
