Zinhle Mazibuko, the 33-year-old actress from Umlazi, KZN, who plays Joy on the hit SABC1 drama Skeem Saam, has shared how her breakthrough in the acting industry changed her life. Reflecting on her journey, Zinhle revealed that it took her nearly nine years to finally break into the industry. “Most things happen when you’re about to throw in the towel,” she said, explaining the frustration she faced before landing her big role.
Zinhle almost gave up on her acting dreams during those challenging years but credits her therapist for encouraging her to keep going. “Thank God for my therapist who encouraged me to pursue my acting career once again. I got my breakthrough in 2021,” she recalled. She emphasized that being part of Skeem Saam has been a transformative experience, offering not only career growth but also a healthy, non-toxic work environment that has allowed her to thrive professionally.
Before joining the Skeem Saam cast, Zinhle was a fitness instructor at Virgin Active in Durban while studying. She flew back and forth to Johannesburg for her acting scenes, balancing the exhausting schedule until her career began to take off. “It was exciting at first, but eventually it became overwhelming. But I appreciate the journey,” she shared. Her role as Joy, a bubbly and outspoken character, challenges her daily, as she never knows which direction the character will take next.
Zinhle acknowledged the impact Skeem Saam has had on her career, saying, “I’m just a girl from Umlazi. You know how we’re perceived coming from there, but God elevated me to a place I never imagined.” She expressed immense gratitude for the opportunities she’s had and the growth she’s experienced in both her career and personal life, giving credit to her faith and determination.
