Kwaito music icon, Professor (real name Mkhonzeni Langa), is embracing his legendary status with ease, saying thereβs no pressure to conform to industry expectations. Unlike many young artists who release their hits during the festive season, the 46-year-old from Umlazi, Durban, took his time and dropped his highly anticipated eight-track EP titled Mkhonzeni. Professor has been in the music industry for over three decades, and heβs relishing this stage in his career.
The legendary musician explained that the freedom to release music on his own terms is one of the greatest perks of his career. βThereβs no pressure on me to release music at a specific time,β he shared, revealing that he now creates music purely for enjoyment and self-expression. The new EP features collaborations with young stars like Kabza De Small, Murumba Pitch, Okmalumkoolkat, and Unathi Nkayi, highlighting his continued influence in the industry.
Professor also revealed that the decision to name the EP after himself was intentional, symbolizing his return to authenticity. βIβm showing that Iβm now being myself, with no pressure from the music industry. Iβve grown, and I have a different purpose,β he said, acknowledging that his journey has led him to appreciate this newfound creative freedom.
Having last released Journey in 2019, Professorβs latest work is a reflection of his evolution as an artist. He said the collaborations on his new EP were with musicians he genuinely enjoys working with, and the appreciation is mutual. While there are other artists featured in his unreleased songs, he chose to keep them under wraps for now.
