Ngizwe Mchunu, the self-proclaimed “President of AmaBhinca” and former Ukhozi FM radio host, has shared a candid reflection on the impact his controversial image and firing had on his career, mental health, and finances. Known for his bold, no-holds-barred personality, Mchunu’s unapologetic stance has earned him a loyal following, but it’s also come with its share of personal and professional costs.

At the peak of his radio career, Mchunu faced a series of public and legal battles that ultimately led to his dismissal from Ukhozi FM in 2018. After 11 years as a beloved radio personality, Mchunu was fired following allegations of leaking confidential station information. The loss of his job, combined with the scrutiny surrounding his public image, took a heavy toll on Mchunu’s life, both personally and financially. He estimates that his career setback cost him as much as R5 million in lost bookings and business opportunities.

Reflecting on the emotional and financial fallout, Mchunu admits that the firing left him deeply depressed. “It affected me a lot,” he shared, speaking openly about the mental health struggles he faced after the incident. “I was highly depressed.” The negative impact wasn’t limited to his finances, with his reputation also taking a hit after he was arrested in 2021 for allegedly inciting violence during the July unrest that followed former president Jacob Zuma’s arrest. The charges, combined with being labeled a “terrorist” by international news outlets, further strained Mchunu’s public image.

Despite these challenges, Mchunu remains unapologetic about his identity and his pride in his Zulu heritage. In a recent interview, he clarified that he is not a tribalist, but is “proud of who I am and proud of the Zulu nation.” He emphasized that if other tribes do not share the same pride, it is “none of my business.” His resilience and unwavering self-pride have allowed him to continue to navigate his public life despite the controversies that have surrounded him.

As Mchunu reflects on the lessons learned from his tumultuous journey, he stresses the importance of understanding the full impact of one’s public persona. His story serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between fame, personal beliefs, and the consequences of public actions. While his career may have taken a major hit, Mchunu’s ability to bounce back and own his story shows the strength of his character, even in the face of adversity.
