Afro-pop singer Lira, born Lerato Molapo, has announced the passing of her beloved mother, Buyi Radebe Lichaba. Lira shared the heartbreaking news on social media on Saturday, 23 November, revealing that her mother passed away on Wednesday, 20 November, at the age of 68. The singer posted a tribute, marking her mother’s birth and death dates: “7 March 1956 to 20 November 2024.”
In her post, Lira expressed deep sorrow over the loss of her mother, who had been a source of unwavering support throughout her life. Lira also reflected on the emotional journey the family had gone through, particularly the challenges they faced in recent years. The family’s hardship began when Lira suffered a stroke in March 2022, and eight months later, her mother was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.

Lira shared that her mother was a health-conscious individual who dedicated herself to fitness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “She spent hours at the gym, took care of herself, and ate well,” Lira wrote in an August 2023 Instagram post. The cancer diagnosis came as a shock to them, as her mother’s health had always been a priority. Despite her efforts to stay healthy, the illness severely impacted her life, leading to three months of hospitalization.
Through her mother’s battle with cancer, Lira witnessed an incredible amount of strength. She described the emotional toll the illness took on their family, explaining that the disease had stripped her mother of her livelihood. “She was so sick,” Lira added, highlighting the profound impact cancer had on her mother’s life and the family’s well-being.
Though her mother fought bravely, she ultimately passed away after her battle with cancer. Lira’s tribute to her mother is a reflection of the love and respect she had for the woman who shaped her into the person she is today. As Lira processes her grief, she continues to receive support and condolences from fans and the music community, who mourn the loss of a woman who was not just a mother, but an inspiration.
