The highly anticipated Mother of All Maskandi festival is returning for its second annual event, offering maskandi musicians a unique opportunity to win a brand-new Toyota Quantum. After last year’s winner, Gatsheni, drove away with the prize, this year’s competition is encouraging fans to nominate their favorite up-and-coming artists for a chance to win a taxi and take their careers to new heights.
The festival is empowering maskandi enthusiasts, who now have the chance to make their favorite musician a taxi owner by voting. However, fans are instructed not to nominate last year’s winner, Gatsheni, or more established stars like Khuzani Mpungose and Mthandeni Manqele, as the competition is designed to give less-recognized artists a platform. This year, the public vote will once again determine the top 30 shortlist of nominees.
Eric Ngobe, the event spokesperson, explained that the festival’s aim is to bridge the gap between successful musicians and those still striving for recognition. “This competition is a chance for others to shine and win a Toyota Quantum,” he said, noting that many talented musicians lack the opportunities to showcase their music. Last year’s festival was a hit, with fans eagerly participating in the nomination process, and this year, it’s expected to be even more engaging.
Fans can nominate their favorite maskandi artists by emailing their names to [email protected] by Friday, 21 February. The top 50 nominees will be announced shortly after, with the event set to take place on Saturday, 5 April, at People’s Park Stadium in Durban. This exciting competition is set to shine a spotlight on new talent in the maskandi genre and offer a life-changing opportunity to one lucky artist.
