The festive season is a time for families to gather, spend quality time, and enjoy meals together. South African celebrities will do the same, cooking their favourite dishes for the family. All Gold tomato sauce ambassadors Bontle Modiselle, Robot Boii, and Somizi share their favourite festive recipes and what they will enjoy for Christmas lunch.
Bontle Modiselle-Moloi’s family usually comes together and visits two or three homes for Christmas. The first half of the day is spent at her husband’s side of the family – the Molois – and the other half with her mom’s side. Although she is a healthy eater, she plans to indulge in this festive season. Her go-to Christmas lunch is anything with meat. She loves her protein and is particularly fond of steak, mogodu, and other hearty dishes.

For Christmas lunch, Bontle will be preparing her fragrant beef dish. She starts by cutting the beef into 1-1/2 inch cubes and covering it with boiling water in a saucepan to boil for one hour until tender. She then drains off excess liquid, lets it rest, and reheats the beef. To finish, she brings the beef to a boil with ginger, garlic, coriander, five spices, white vinegar, and salt, and cooks for 10 more minutes.
Somizi Mhlongo has his very own cookbook and loves the holiday season. This festive, he will be indulging in hearty meals. He’s not a fan of turkeys, roasted chickens, and things – they tend to be dry. Instead, he loves soul food; stews, mutton curries, and oxtails. He also loves savoury rice and lately, he’s been loving making Asian food. On Christmas, he’ll be making short rib, braai meat, and oxtail.

Somizi’s Oxtail Ragu is a favourite dish of his. He starts by preheating the oven and lightly oiling a baking pan large enough to hold the oxtail. He then rubs the oxtail sections with olive oil, seasons with salt and black pepper, and roasts in the oven for 25 minutes. He then flips the oxtails and continues roasting until well browned for 35 minutes more. To finish, he adds All Gold tomato sauce, chicken stock, vinegar, thyme, oregano, rosemary, salt, and red pepper flakes to the baking pan, stirs, and transfers the mixture to a large pot. He then simmers the mixture over low heat until the oxtails are very tender and easily separate from bones.

Robot Boii, influencer, dancer, musician, and son of poet Mzakwe Mbuli, plans to spend quality time with his family around Christmas time. He’s not much of a cook and will leave the cooking to his family. His favourite holiday season dish is any fragrant rice. He’s on his health journey now, so he loves a good basmati rice dish with a twist. He also loves a good coleslaw.

Robot Boii’s basmati dish is a simple yet delicious recipe. He starts by heating a pot or pan with cooking oil, adds and sears minced garlic, and then adds water and chicken stock. He then adds rice, stirs, and lets it come to a boil. To finish, he lowers the heat to medium-low, covers with a lid, and cooks the rice pilaf for 15-17 minutes. Once the rice is done, he adds defrosted mixed vegetables.
